  • Just a quick one to say the final comics have arrived from the printer and we're posting them round the UK today

Also - got an update this morning confirming the final US comics are in transit inside the USA and should arrive this week. As soon as they do, the warehouse team will swing into action mailing those across the US and round the rest of the world.

More as it happens.

New Art
about 1 year ago – Thu, Feb 23, 2023 at 09:46:04 AM

Hey there

When life gives you lemons, make art. That's my motto. Not necessarily like John Squire, much as I loved his Stone Roses paintings, but because it's the only thing keeping me sane since the car crash.

Yes - I've been plunged into a nightmare world of insurance and car dealers whose only mission is to be as cheerfully incompetent and useless as humanly possible. How are you doing?

Luckily, this has all coincided with time I'd set aside to catch up on my commissions so I've been breaking out the pens and paper and losing myself in some steampunk and cyberpunk style artwork.

"What pens, Monty?" I hear you cry. "Don't tease us - what pens?!!" I know how much sexy pen talk turns you on so in this case I used a Uni pen 0.1 fine line for, well, fine lines and a Mangaka fine brush pen for thicker brush strokes. Also a fountain Pentel for some bits though I found it a bit scratchy for these purposes. Then applied colour and tone with copics. Voila.

These are all part of the Death Sentence universe of characters, more on that soon. I used to use a brush and ink pot for this kind of thing, sable size 2 a la Brian Bolland, but it's too slow and there's more likelihood of a drip ruining everything. I found the pens really quick and relaxing to use and they gave me the intricate look I was after, plus they're all archival quality and don't smudge or fade or get diluted by the colour ink so it all looks top quality. I enjoy losing myself in a good drawing and only take on commissions I'm genuinely excited by these days. Life is too short for half-hearted art. With a commission you're getting a little piece of an artists life laid down on paper so it should always be something they and you care passionately about

Anyway, I've got a couple more commissions still to do and THERE'S SPACE FOR ONE MORE in the next two weeks if you fancy some artwork yourself. To be fair I haven't offered commissions for years, wish I could but I need to draw the actual comics. And I probably won't be offering any for another year or two, because I'll be busy working on some lengthy writing and graphic novel projects. So now is the window for original art in this style. If you're interested drop me a line and we'll discuss the details.

Meanwhile, I've set up the next Death Sentence Kickstarter campaign which you can find here. Be sure to follow it so you don't miss out when it launches. I'm also waiting on the final batch of comics to arrive, now due here Monday. So we've been getting all the envelopes and address labels ready for the next big mail out.

More news soon

Good news
about 1 year ago – Wed, Feb 15, 2023 at 03:41:56 AM

Good news: the printer tells me the last consignment of comics will be shipping to both warehouses next week. That being the case we’ll be able to start sending out the UK orders at the end of this month.

USA and world orders get mailed to the warehouse at the same time and It used to take no more than a week for them to arrive, but that changed during covid times and international shopping has been a lot less predictable since. Saying that, the last batch took ten days. I’ll keep you updated.

One more thing, as per my last update, we’re switching to publishing graphic novels rather than comics in future. An essential part of that is collecting Liberty into a graphic novel sometime this year, so people backing future campaigns can get ALL the earlier stories as books. This will ship with a brand new cover, signed, with twelve new pages, and some minor lettering and colour amendments.

Not sure when this will happen, it could be months, but if you follow the page here you’ll be first to see it and get notified whenever it goes live.

And if you have the comics themselves look after them, as switching to books in future will make the original run of comics more rare and valuable.

More soon.

All the best

Print update - last call for comics!

Print proofs of Issue 6

Ok, two more deliveries of books have arrived in the USA and UK. We're now just waiting on the full run of Death Sentence 6 comics, and when they arrive at the warehouse we can start sending everything out together. Issue 6 looks really beautiful in print, I'm chuffed with how it feels and looks.

It seems like the UK consignment will arrive before the USA, about two weeks earlier, in which case we will fulfil all the UK orders first.

Sorry for the wait, but things are moving. Meanwhile I'm busy finishing commissions and working on new Death Sentence titles.

Looking forward to the next campaigns,  the plan is to concentrate on books rather than comics. That means I'm not planning to print any more Death Sentence comics at all.  Once this current campaign (DS Liberty 6) is fulfilled, we'll have stock of everything in the USA and UK warehouse. But many comics will be really low numbers and won't be reprinted. I'm looking at figures of 27, 18, 6 for different issues after this campaign is fulfilled. One issue will have 200+ issues in stock, but it you want a complete run it's dictated by the issues with lowest stock number. So once these have all been sold, at cons and online, that'll be it for Death Sentence comics. The plan is to only make new graphic novels and keep all the graphic novels in print, moving forward.

I've been keeping individual Death Sentence comics in stock for ten years, and it wasn't really for business reasons. I just love comics! Personally I adore making, owning and reading floppy comics, but it seems readers increasingly want longer complete stories in book form. So that's what we'll do.

So, if you are missing any back issues of comics, or want a complete run of comics, now is a good time to get an order in. Do it now and these will ship with your Kickstarter order. (You can either go back to your survey and add things, or go to the shop here https://ds-liberty-1-to-6.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders)
