Spotlight on Cheeky

Cheeky is the 23rd kickstarter by Pat Shand, working here with his wife Amy Shand  on a 50-page graphic novel in the style of their previous hit THIRSTY. 23 kickstarters is a lot! You know you're going to get the real deal from a team with this much experience.

On Cheeky Pat and Amy are teaming up with some great artists

  •  JENN ST-ONGE: Jenn has worked with us on almost all of our titles and delivered two stunning stories in THIRSTY. Now, she's back with a dazzling cover and interior art on a story you won't soon forget.
  •  JOE PEKAR: Known for his NSFW pirate romp REDD VELVETTE, Joe joins us to tell a story about romance found on a beach.
  •  TINA VALENTINO: Tina has a brilliant imagination when it comes to covers, so now we see her bring that talent to a truly exciting story.
  •  ELISA DI VIRGILIO: Elisa rounds out the team by kicking Cheeky off with an evocative story about touch.

CHEEKY is a graphic novel made up of four sexy stories that overlap in fun, exciting ways.

Imagine a device that, when held by a couple, makes music as they touch...

Imagine a fan-fic writer attempting to appease her long-distant girlfriend with steamy stories...

Imagine a couple getting hot and heavy as someone else witnesses, fantasizing in ways they couldn't dream of...

Imagine all of those stories coming together for a sexy and hilarious climax at a booty contest...

These four stories all come together in the spiciest graphic novel you'll read this year.  You can check it out here

Second stretch goal hit!
almost 2 years ago – Sun, Jul 17, 2022 at 09:08:12 PM

Awesome! That's the Verity pin-up secured. Next up we're aiming for that juicy bonus content in every issue. Keep spreading the word on social media.  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/f02/death-sentence-liberty-1-to-6-504-pages-of-comics?ref=project_tweet It really helps fatten up the rewards for every backer, in digital and print.

There's lots of great comics on kickstarter right now...

Ten Earth Shattering Blows is a fantasy action adventure, the love child of Conan the Barbarian and Mad Max. It's the story of two young women forced to travel together in a lawless desert, caught between ruthless warlords, lizard-riding warriors and a mysterious conspiracy that seems to involve the creepiest magical arts known to men. It contains violence, profanity and mild nudity, so it's recommended for a mature audience, and it's all put together by one guy Tommaso, aka Nuclearpasta, who draws some inspired scenes. Check it out here

WORDSMITH

Word Smith Volume 4 - TRUST is a 60 page (TBC) graphic novel and the latest instalment of the series about the word smith, Victoria and her best friend, Sparky the dragon. It contains a stand alone story but you can also catch up on all previous volume digitally or physically!

The story is by Stephen Kok and the amazing pages are illustrated by P.R. Dedelis and coloured by Peyton Freeman. It's the fourth campaign for the fourth volume so you know the team will deliver on the great range of rewards and stretch goals. Check it out here.

Thanks again for backing Death Sentence. It means a lot.

All the best

Inspiration - and creativity. Some ideas
almost 2 years ago – Thu, Jul 07, 2022 at 08:11:15 PM

Huge thanks to everyone for our best ever start to a KS campaign. You rock.

Cover art is a fascinating area. I've been painting covers for a while and I can't say I've ever found it easy. There are some real cover art masters out there and I'm definitely not one of them. But I've learnt as time has gone on and the process has gradually become easier.

50's inspired 'flaming skull' cover

Practically, I often use the covers to concept design a character or visualise a key moment, style or mood* As a writer artist letterer editor and occasional ad hoc marketing dude time is a constant pressure, and if I can get two or three uses out of a painting that's a big  win. By which I mean if it can make a cover which looks cool, helps sell the comic, can maybe be a pin-up or art print, will get shared around by news/comics sites,  and also defines a visual direction for the comic, a new character, or defines a dramatic plot moment, then that's a great use of my time.

(*Three of the Liberty 1-6 covers and cover variants indicate the future direction of the comic.  I'll leave it to you to figure out which ones.)

The flip side of that is that it's important to be inspired, and to ride all the moments of inspiration that come my way. So if I get inspired to paint and draw some really cool skulls, or paint a futuristic motorbike, or try my hand at a 50's style pin-up,  then I'll roll with that just for the hell of it. (It only occurred to me afterwards: I  spent many hours of my childhood drawing skulls and motorbikes over my school books. I guess some things never change.)

The first approach is quite controlled and thoughtful. The second is a lot more loose and emotional. The best art is often spontaneous, I think. So inspiration is very important

Of course, no-one can be inspired all the time. The mark of a professional, it could be argued, is reaching a standard of creativity, craft and process, where no-one can tell the difference between the times you were inspired and the times when you weren't.

Sometimes in life I've been incredibly inspired. And other times I've hit a real trough.  Eventually I figured out that the determining factor was how hopeful I felt. Without hope, inspiration dies. Hope that there's some purpose to what you're doing, some way of improving or progressing,  spiritually or practically. Hope is everything to an artist, and to a human being. It's one of the most powerful forces on the planet, capable of changing countries and defining history. So it's no surprise it also helps you be creative.

If you're struggling for inspiration maybe reassess your goals. If you're goals are too big, too hard, that can be very inhibiting.  A little recalibration can help. Maybe just try and draw something that makes you happy. Maybe just enjoy an hour of peaceful drawing for the meditative feeling it gives you, without worrying about what you're making, or caring what you or anyone else thinks about how 'good' it is.  It's very freeing. Your sense of hope is often linked to your entire life,  and how optimistic you choose to be. And it is a choice. There's not always a quick fix, but these simple techniques can kickstart real change and free up your creativity.

The great thing about creating your own comics is its just so damn inspiring. There's always the hope that this might be the idea, of the issue, or the scene, where you really crack it. Or at least get better, and do something which makes you proud. And there's no-one to stop you doing that. You just need some paper, a pencil, your imagination...and a little hope.

Of course, so many creator owned comics wouldn't exist without the support of folks like you. Together you've unleashed great reservoirs of creativity and hope in the comic community.  The best projects creators make are often the most quirky and personal, and you've made it possible for them to find an audience. So give yourself props for that.

In that spirit, here are a few different creator owned comics to check out:

MISKATONIC HIGH

Miskatonic High is a comic series about teens who take on creepy tentacled monsters and their small-town high school...they're just not sure which is worse.

In the rustic hills of a small New England town lies the prestigious Miskatonic High School. When the Community Services Club went on a field trip they were launched back to ancient Egypt and were nearly killed by an evil wizard and his tentacle monster. They escaped back to our century, but things have never been the same. Since then, we learned some of the secrets haunting the students of the Community Service Club and that the world is not what they thought it was.

If you like your horror mixed with tongue-in-cheek humor, like Buffy, Evil Dead or Get Out, you'll probably enjoy Miskatonic High!

The Pullbox called Miskatonic High “the bastard lovechild of John Hughes & H.P. Lovecraft.”

And Goshdarn Geeky had this to say: "It’s great to see Philippine culture and mythology represented in the pages of Miskatonic High. For one thing, it shows us that Shea and Mendoza aren’t limiting themselves  to the Cthulhu Mythos, but are creating their very own universe that’s home to horrors pulled from a rich assortment of sources. Secondly, the Philippines boasts some truly dark and disturbing tales that’ll be new  to a lot of people. And what’s scarier than coming face to face with the  unknown?"

It's written by Mike Shea and drawn by Ryan Mendoza and on it's 15th issue so you know these guys will deliver a strong product with lots of stretch goal rewards. And there's only a day or so left to get it so check it out here right now. http://kck.st/3tfCKCA

DEAD END MOON

DEAD END MOON is the journey of Maggie Dean, a cursed bounty hunter scouring the supernatural world of the wild west for evil creatures and spirits.

In the first issue, Maggie is hot on the trail of a mythic figure known as The Dead Man, another cursed bounty hunter who was responsible for killing her father. Now, with the help of some unwitting accomplices, Maggie must unravel the mystery of the Seventh City of Gold.

The new campaign is for the second issue where Maggie squares up against a dangerous entity that dwells in ancient, malevolent waters.

Art is by Gwynn Tavres, letters by Dave Lentz, and it's written by Scott Wilke - already funded at nearly 3 times its total with some great rewards and stretch goals. Check it out here

THE EXILED

The producer and star of the Blade franchise is back with a 140-page, OVERSIZED, balls-to-the-wall sci-fi/noir graphic novel. No punches pulled here.

In this dark tale, Detective Niles “Roach” Washington pursues a serial killer five thousand years in the makings. The world around him says to ignore the signs he's seeing, but his instincts push him forward. With enemies on all sides and within, Roach wades into the darkness to find the killer and uncovers Earth’s darkest secret.

Not only that, but the graphic novel will contain hidden codes throughout the pages that will unlock digital collectibles. These codes will not appear in any other version of the book, so this is your chance to get them. The digital collectibles are going to include exclusive access to events, art, comics, and other exciting experiences.

Plus - there's more to explore! The Exiled is a complete story, but it also opens the door to many others. Exiled: The Forgotten Wars is a perfect-bound 48-page story set in the world of Exiled, but a thousand years earlier. It is standard comic size. Without giving away its secrets, it will be haunting and action-packed, and the only way to get it is through this campaign.

You can even get it signed by Wesley Snipes himself! The whole thing is created by Wesley with Keith Arem and Adam Lawson co-writing, and Garbriel 'Eskivo' Santos on art duties. It's one hell of a team. Go get it here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/failedsuperhero/the-exiled?ref=project_tweet

More soon.

Cheers
